The Word across Canada (November 27)

Every week we want to bring to your attention expository, Gospel-centred sermons from pastors across Canada. We hope that you become familiar with some of the faithful ministers of the word in our nation. We also hope that you will be edified on your daily commute or whenever you listen to these messages. We lastly hope that you learn about the churches where these pastors minister, so that you can easily find Gospel-centered, expository churches in your region.

Clint Humfrey on Philippians 1:7-11 (Calgary)

What are the things that influence you? What are the things that you are willing to stand up for? It is the things that are most important that will affect us, and we will defend them with all of our passion. In Paul’s letter to the Philippian church, he prayerfully reminds them of how the grace of God has affected them causing their love for Jesus to grow, along with their desire to defend his gospel. Are you passionately taking a stand?

Here are the sermon’s main points:

  1. Affections & Apologetics in Fellowship (v 7)
  2. Affections & Apologetics in Prayer (v.8-9)
  3. Affections & Apologetics in Growth (v.10-11)

Rob Godard on Pursuing Holiness (Surrey)

God is holy, and this means utterly pure, and completely separate and unique.

His holiness as we understand it will cause us to tremble, and realize that we can’t measure up and to have a holy life is to realize we are set apart for His purpose, and to conform our lives to His precepts.

– To be holy is to be obedient to the Bible and distinct from the sins of the world

– To be holy is to be like God!

But not only do we need to be holy, in terms of imputed righteousness, we also need to pursue holiness in every area of our lives and relationally become who God wants us to become.

– We will pursue holiness because we love God- We will pursue holiness because it is commanded- We will pursue holiness because it is best!Over the next two Sunday’s we are going to talk about what it means practically to pursue holiness, and why this is so important.

Paul Carter on Mark 9:1-13: “A Glimpse Of Future Glory” (Orillia)

In this message Pastor Paul explores looks at the story of the transfiguration of Jesus. Sitting as it does between the first two of Jesus’ passion predictions, it seems as though this encounter was engineered by the Lord to encourage and strengthen his disciples. It is also clear that he intended that encouragement to be shared with each of us. So what did they see and why was it helpful? These are the main questions that Pastor Paul works through in this sermon from his ongoing series through the Gospel of Mark. Listen or watch here.

Christian Frappier on 2 Timothy 3:10-17

Still in our series The Word of God has done everything, we explore two questions of Martin Luther, as well as his search for love and peace of God. By comparing our lives in 2017, we discover that the answers are found at the very source of God ; his Word.

//

Josh Tong on Luke 11:1-13 “True Prayer” (King City)

When it comes to prayer, we can get so caught up in asking ourselves whether we’ve been praying, that we forget to ask ourselves what we should be praying for. Join Pastor Josh as he explains how the Lord’s Prayer in Luke 11 sets the priorities for our prayers.

George Sinclair on Galatians 5:2-15 (Ottawa)

A recent poll in Canada found that evangelical Christians were more popular than Muslims. Actually, a more accurate way to say this is that we are less unpopular than Muslims! When the average Canadian thinks of Christians, they think we are obsessed with sex, money, rules, power and excluding people. Whether or not this is fair, it is a shock to many to see that after Paul’s great declaration that, “For freedom Christ has set us free, stand firm therefore, and do not submit again to a yoke of slavery”, the first thing he warns people against is religion. In this sermon, we open up Galatians 5:2-15 as Paul sets forth how faith in the Gospel leads to freedom, hope and love.

Paul Martin on Exodus 17:1–7 (Toronto)

So far in the Exodus narrative, we have seen God test the Israelites to show them their hearts and grow their dependence on Him. But this time the people test God! They should be judged for treason and rebellion, but God responds in a remarkable display of mercy and compassion that points directly to Christ.
