The Word across Canada (November 13)

Every week we want to bring to your attention expository, Gospel-centred sermons from pastors across Canada. We hope that you become familiar with some of the faithful ministers of the word in our nation. We also hope that you will be edified on your daily commute or whenever you listen to these messages. We lastly hope that you learn about the churches where these pastors minister, so that you can easily find Gospel-centered, expository churches in your region.

Paul Martin on “Sola Scriptura Part Two: Anchored to the Word in the Midst of Canadian Pluralism” (Toronto)

Sola Scriptura is not just a 500 year old concept. If Christians in Canada don’t hold to the Word today. they will be tossed and driven into spiritual shipwreck by the waves of pluralism. Although pluralism can be a very good thing, taken the wrong way it will dilute the church. We need Christians who cast their anchors on to the Word and hold steady through the storm.

Here is the message.

Robbie Symons on “Sola Fide – Faith Alone (Oakville)” from Romans 5:1-2

The material principle of the Reformation is found in Romans 5:1.  This is the principle of Faith which is the cornerstone of Christianity.  It is the key that unlocks all the other Solas.  Without faith, it is impossible to please God : we can never earn his favour or forgiveness by works.  Only by faith in Christ, are we justified and deemed righteous in the sight of God.

Paul Carter on Mark 8:1-33: “Slow To Understand” (Orillia)

In this message Pastor Paul returns to the Gospel of Mark series by looking at Mark 8:1-33. The several stories featured in this section all share a common theme: the disciples of Jesus are slow to understand. Why is that? What is it that really keeps us from seeing and savouring Jesus as we should? How independent are we in our thinking?

George Sinclair on Galatians 4:21-23 (Ottawa)

Do you “make yourself a Christian?” It is funny, on one hand Galatians 4:21-31 is a perfect example of why many people give up reading the Bible. It seems arcane and confusing and irrelevant. However, when read slowly and carefully, it is a profound statement that every Christian is a miracle – God acts to do something supernatural, turning a fallen human being into His child.

Dan Thomson on John 19:16-42 (Charlottetown)

It’s easy to become desensitized to the reality of the cross. Not only do we discuss the crucifixion account often already, but we’re also living in a world of 24/7 news with terrorism and death at the forefront. We view scenes of violence too often. Christ’s agony must never become a matter of dispassionate interest. His physical sufferings have always been, and will remain a window through which we see His agony as he bore the world’s sin. We should not overemphasize it, but we also should not underestimate it’s importance.

The overarching theme of this passage is that Christ willingly went to the cross. No hesitation. No fight. No resistance. This was part of God’s plan and Christ was willing to sacrifice and atone for our sins, even while we were still dead in our trespasses and sins.

Rob Godard on “Pursuing Holiness: Priority” (Surrey)

The Bible tells us that, without holiness, we will not see God (Hebrews 12:14). and this includes a practical pursuit of holiness. With holiness as an offshoot of salvation and our pursuit of it is key to proving our authenticity. We must understand what holiness is and how to live holy lives in this generation.  The best place to go in terms of our pursuit of holiness is a relationship with God, and this must include a proper understanding of who He is!  If we have a Biblical view of God. then Christianity will make sense, and life can be lived without anxiety as we live conscious of His presence. When all of life falls apart, our view of God will keep us trusting and obeying and cause us to live a holy life. God Is Holy!
