Every week we want to bring to your attention expository, Gospel-centred sermons from pastors across Canada. We hope that you become familiar with some of the faithful ministers of the word in our nation. We also hope that you will be edified on your daily commute or whenever you listen to these messages. We lastly hope that you learn about the churches where these pastors minister, so that you can easily find Gospel-centered, expository churches in your region.

Rob Godard on “Lessons On The Journey: The Destruction of Sin” from Joshua 7:1-9 (Surrey)

Sin is a terrible and dangerous thing.  The world in which we live is devaluing the greatness of God, and in that context, treating sin as a non-issue.  So when we will hear things like, it’s not big deal, or God wants me happy, or God’s word is not true, or doesn’t mean what it says, we are on dangerous territory.

This is dangerous, not only because of a lack of understanding of the seriousness of sin will lead to a lack of experience of the love of God, but also because sin is dangerous! Sin will not satisfy, and it will lead to emptiness, destruction and chaos. Sin always leads to destruction and death and if we are flippant with sin, it is because we devalue God, in that diminished glory see life through our eyes, and not His.

Clint Humfrey on Psalm 42 (Calgary)

After the horrors of two world wars, Martyn Lloyd-Jones described the experience of many people in his congregation as a spiritual depression. As a medical doctor, he made a diagnosis and offered a cure. Both diagnosis and cure are found in Psalm 42. This psalm’s solution to spiritual depression has helped saints through the centuries.

Paul Martin on the Sabbath (Toronto)

There is a huge spectrum of differing opinions on how the Sabbath applies to us today. But before we can talk about that, it’s important to first consider what the Sabbath meant to the people of Israel in the Old Testament. We may not think much about the consequences of getting the Sabbath wrong today, but for the people of Israel, it was literally a matter of life and death! If you want to know why the Sabbath was so important to God, listen to this sermon and find out.

Jeff Jones on Psalm 82 (Calgary)

In a world filled with unfairness and wicked leadership, how can we find justice? In Psalm 82, Asaph shows us how we can know what true justice is, why it is so absent here on earth, what the consequences will be for evil rulers and judges, and what we are to do in the face of injustice.

Rob Godard on “Lessons on The Journey: A Teenager That Rocked His World” from 1 Samuel 17 (Surrey)

It is fun to look at familiar Old Testament stories to remind ourselves of the greatness of God, and the fact that God uses ordinary people like you and I to do marvelous things.  It is also important as we look at these stories to remember that we have a purpose in life just like these people, and we have a God that uses weak people.  It is not a matter of being more beautiful, or stronger, or better, but it is a matter of strengthening our faith in our almighty God.

Old Testament stories allow us to do this.  Like we discussed last week, God hasn’t changed, what we need is some more heroes, men and women of God who have a heart for God.

God uses these passages to give us hope, to build our faith, to sharpen our obedience!
